An April Doubleheader In the Kingdom

Sometimes April brings a rare opportunity to enjoy my two favorite sports: skiing and mountain biking.  You would expect that a day where you could mix the two would lead to mediocre conditions for both.  Typically the best you could hope for would be some turns on corn snow followed by a slog on some muddy singletrack.  But last weekend provided an unbelievable opportunity to enjoy both sports at their best.

The six inches of powder in the previous forty eight hours provided skiing conditions at Jay that were more like mid-winter than spring.  So after a hearty breakfast at the Miss Lyndonville Diner, we lapped fresh powder and then headed back to East Burke for some afternoon mountain biking.  More surprising than the snow at Jay was the lack of any mud on the trails in the Kingdom.  The table tops were crisp, the berms were packed, and we biked until the sun was low on the horizon.

To top off the day we grabbed beers and pizza from my favorite little spot, Trout River Brewery.

This was a day for the ages.  An April doubleheader.

  1. It's not often you get a day where you can enjoy the best of both worlds!
