2011-2012 Backcountry Ski Comparison Chart

Snow is finally falling which means that it's time for this year's backcountry ski comparison chart.  I've already been busy stalking this year's boards, and the fruits of my obsessive-compulsive labors are here for your enjoyment.

I've focused on those skis designed specifically for backcountry touring.  Thus, I've eliminated those that weigh more than nine pounds, and you won't find any skinny skate skis.  I've also included the discontinued K2 Backlash (highlighted), which is my favorite backcountry ski, to give an idea of what I see as a near-perfect makeup for an East Coast "quiver of one" ski.

So, without further ado, here they are, organized from the slimmest underfoot to the widest:

If you're looking for a place to purchase your skis, definitely check out the deals at The Outdoor Gear Exchange.

We also have found some decent deals at Evo.com.

Let me know if I've missed some of your favorites-- especially those that have tested well on our fickle New England slopes.

And if you're a manufacturer that I've left out, feel free to show your displeasure by sending a demo pair of your top backcountry planks.  I promise I'll put them to work.

  1. Are you comparing weights of skis with different lengths, please clarify

  2. Yes. You'll notice the fourth column is the ski length. As to why I chose the lengths that I did.... I was aiming for 175cm boards or as close as they come for each ski. Some skis I wasn't able to find data on that length, and for others the recommended length is different given the intended use of the ski (big mountain boards are generally longer on this table). For a true comparison of weights you can break out the algebra to a pound per cm figure.

  3. what about the G3 Manhattan?

I have a pair of them in 180 length. haven't skied/mounted them yet, dimensions in 180 size are 9lbs 1.8 ounces a pair. :( heavy
    139-108-128

my favorites VT backcountry ski is still the G3 Tonics, lively ski in 177cm

  4. The Manhattans just missed my cutoff of 9lbs. I've heard a number of people say that they like the Tonics too. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Your chart provided me with 20 min of Excel geekiness - I used the Wildsnow surface area:weight conversion to figure out rough SA:weight ratios for these skis, then used that ratio and your prices to figure out what I'm calling a "float value score" (of course it's no such thing, but it's fun). If you want a copy, leave a reply with a way to send it to you.

  6. Thanks for reminding me to add an email address to my profile. All geekiness can be forwarded to andy@noreasterbackcountry.com.
